A book cover is often the first thing a young reader notices, so the artwork has to feel kind of welcoming , but it cant lose the link to the actual story, you know. For childrens book covers I usually zoom in on the practical stuff like type that is easy to read , where the characters land on the page , and the way the colors sit together , sort of balanced, not too loud. I also pay attention to age appropriate artwork, and how the front cover fits in with the rest of the book, like it all belongs in the same world. A solid cover design should give a quick sense of what the story is about , while still leaving that little bit of mystery so a child wants to open the book right away.
